Job Description


The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development is responsible for the design and implementation of the Australian Government's infrastructure, transport and regional development policies and programs. It is at the forefront of the Australian Government’s efforts to secure the nation’s economic future and improve living standards. On behalf of the Government, the department supports and promotes new jobs, productivity improvements, economic growth and sustainability through significant social and infrastructure investment in all areas of Australia, including to communities in regional Australia.

The General Manager, Regional Programs Branch, is a key appointment in achieving the objectives of the Australian Government in strengthening the sustainability, capacity and diversity of regional economies. Reporting to the Executive Director, Regional Development and Local Government, the role is responsible for the overall shaping, coordinating and driving of the implementation of programs nationally, to stimulate economic growth and productivity and to contribute to vibrant viable regional communities. The role is also responsible for grant and contract management, as well as quality and risk management in the delivery of services on behalf of government. Positive and effective leadership and stakeholder engagement is critical to success in this role, as is the capacity to provide high quality advice to the Senior Executive of the Department and to the Government to enable the achievement of strategic outcomes. The role also requires the capacity to manage change and provide business continuity during the relocation of the Branch to Orange, NSW during the financial year.

To be a strong contender for this challenging and important role, applicants will have extensive experience in program and project management, including financial management and grants. Applicants will also have excellent stakeholder and people management skills, with the ability to establish, build and maintain productive working relationships to achieve cross government outcomes; exceptional communication and negotiation skills; proven ability to achieve organisational objectives; experience in solving complex and high profile issues; and demonstrated ability to maintain a strategic focus, recognise opportunities, be innovative and deliver outcomes.



Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

• Citizenship: To be eligible for employment applicants must be an Australian citizen.

• Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 2.
