Duties


The Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau) is Australia’s national weather, climate and water agency. The Bureau assists Australians to prepare and respond to the natural environment. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic Territory, the Bureau provides one of the most fundamental and widely used public services. The Bureau delivers its products and services to all Australian people and institutions directly, through multiple channels. Its services are vital to Australia’s emergency services, defence, agriculture, aviation and other industries.

The Bureau is now seeking a General Manager Data to join the Data and Digital Group. This Group provides the data, technology and digital services to enable the delivery of outstanding customer experiences. This role if the Chief Data Officer of the Bureau where data is the lifeblood of the organisation. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities across the organisation’s data value chain, including data requirements, data quality data governance and data services. The General Manager Data will develop a viable roadmap for the Bureau to expand its capabilities in data analytics and data science, exploiting new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine leaning to deliver improved and more responsive services to the Bureau’s customers.

High quality candidates will have provided strategic leadership in data management in a scientific context. They will have a demonstrated background in data quality, data governance or data science. They will have a track record of successful leadership of professional teams in a science and /or operational environment. They will have excellent communication and engagement skills suited to internal and external outreach and collaborating with executive managers across the Bureau and within partner agencies.

Eligibility


A degree in science or a related discipline. The successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.
