Job Description
Duties
The Department of the Environment and Energy designs and implements Australian Government policy and programs to protect and conserve the environment, water and heritage, promote climate action and provide adequate, reliable and affordable energy.
The Department is seeking a Senior Executive in the role of Assistant Secretary Wetlands, Policy and Northern Water Use. As the Assistant Secretary, you will support the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder in ensuring the highly effective management and use of the Commonwealth water holdings, in the implementation of the Ramsar convention on wetlands of international importance.
The position is at the front line of issues management and will need to cultivate and foster the development of strong, productive working relationships with community, industry, first nations and environmental groups, and with governments at all levels. As such the successful applicant will have exceptional engagements skills, the capacity to build credibility and understanding of our business and be able to engage with detailed content knowledge while managing to a strategic longer term outcome.
A willingness to travel regularly to rural and remote locations to engage with basin communities is essential. Also essential is the capacity to engage with the policy and technical workings of the water industry which may be developed over time in the job.
As a member of the Senior Executive leadership team, you will be responsible to the Division Head for directing, planning and coordinating the work of the Branch within the broader objectives of the Division, including in support of the Department’s priorities and objectives.
The successful applicant should have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People. If a security clearance is required the successful applicant must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance level for the duration of their employment in the position.
