Kick start your career with the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) in 2020.

At the ABCC we promote understanding and enforce compliance with Australia’s workplace laws in the building and construction industry.

We do this by:

• providing information and resources
• advising and assisting everyone to understand their rights and obligations
• impartially monitoring and assessing compliance
• using the full range of enforcement options to address non-compliance.

The ABCC has offices in each capital city across Australia, most comprise of multi-disciplinary teams of Inspectors, Lawyers and support personnel.

About the role

We have outstanding opportunities available for recent graduates or near-graduates that have a genuine interest in commencing their career as an APS 3 Graduate Inspector in the highly specialised and exciting area of workplace relations.

As a Graduate Inspector, you will undertake assessments, investigations and audits relating to breaches of Commonwealth workplace laws. You will also participate in education sessions that the ABCC provides to the building and construction industry, assist with the preparation of reports and briefs of evidence and maintain and use digital technologies such as case management systems.

This is a 12-month opportunity, where you will receive extensive support including mentoring and access to learning and development activities. Being a small agency, you won’t be overlooked when you work with us.

About you

We’re looking for graduates from a broad range of disciplines that may have studied in areas including but not limited to;

• Industrial relations
• Workplace relations
• Human Resources
• Criminology
• Investigations or Law

No professional experience is required, however, you will need to demonstrate:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills
• A flexible approach and willingness to learn in a team environment
• An ability to apply critical thinking and analysis to a range of situations
• Drive and enthusiasm for long term career success
• Strong academic results.

We anticipate that interviews will be held in mid-December, with the selection process to be finalised by early January. If successful you will commence in early February.

This process may also be used to develop a merit list of suitable applicants for vacancies that may arise over the next 12 months.


Applications are welcome from current graduates, near-graduates or if you have graduated from university with a Bachelor degree within the past two years from the application closing date.

To be eligible for employment at the ABCC, you must be an Australian Citizen and agree to pre-employment screening. This may include a criminal history (police) check, health clearances and character checks. Some positions may require additional checks to be performed and require a security clearance.

Successful applicants who complete their fixed term of 12 months in the graduate role and receive a ‘meets expectations’ rating towards the end of their term may be appointed to an ongoing APS 4 position.

You should be aware that successful applicants may be required to travel interstate for operational training or to assist in other ABCC offices. You must also hold a current driver’s licence.
