Duties


The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and integration of the newly established Corporate Division. Championing the organisation’s vision, the role ensures the entity’s sustainability, enabling it to deliver on the Geoscience Australia Strategy 2028 strategic plan.

The Chief Operating Officer is a member of the Geoscience Australia Executive and provides strategic, influential advice to the Chief Executive Officer and senior executive colleagues that reflects an understanding of the organisation, analysis of a broad range of issues, stewardship of the whole of government agenda and considers emerging trends or opportunities to align operations with strategic priorities.

The Corporate Division provides professional expertise, strategies, products and services across an extensive range of corporate functions, including: corporate strategy, human resources, financial services, information communication technology, digital science support, governance, audit and risk, security (physical, personnel and information), building and facilities management, communications, data policy and information management.

The role requires enthusiasm, flexibility, strategic focus, commitment and exceptional communication skills in order to ensure the delivery of multiple initiatives that significantly impact the organisation’s efficiency and effectiveness in a dynamic and diverse environment.

In this role you will:

• shape and implement long-term corporate strategies by aligning the resources and functions within the Corporate Division to the organisation’s strategic plan, government objectives and the future needs of the Australian Public Service.

• communicate the strategic direction, setting expectations to drive engagement and commitment to delivery of defined objectives.

• provide professional, trusted, persuasive and strategic advice, anticipating the needs of key stakeholders.

• champion whole of government initiatives and reforms.

• identify and champion positive change for the organisation, creating a shared sense of purpose and commitment to change objectives.

• lead and manage the operations of the Corporate Division including strategic workforce and business planning, delivery of enabling functions, performance reporting and program delivery.

• exercise influence across the Australian Public Service, initiating and nurturing a strong external peer network.

• provide leadership within the senior executive team to influence outcomes through engaging and motivating others over priorities, the use of resources, and strategic decisions.

• represent Geoscience Australia at a range of internal and external, national and international commitments and forums.

 

Eligibility


To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.

The successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level Two security clearance or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.

Commencement of employment is subject to the successful applicant undergoing and satisfying a police history check.
