Duties


At the ATO, you’ll do work that makes a real difference to the lives of Australians and that contributes to their economic and social wellbeing.

As Chief Internal Auditor, you’ll provide independent advice and assurance on the operations of the ATO, strategic leadership for our internal audit branch and work closely with the ATO Audit Committee.

You will lead one of Australia’s largest internal audit practices and contribute to the effective administration of Australia’s tax system.

You’ll direct a comprehensive program of Internal Audit work in the form of risk based reviews, audits, consultancy advice and assessments of the effectiveness of governance and control frameworks.

You will actively build sustainable relationships with senior stakeholders within and outside the ATO, including senior representatives from other government agencies, external scrutineers and auditors across the APS and in the private sector.

Our ideal candidate:

> has considerable professional experience as a chief auditor with a strong understanding of, and commitment to, internal auditing
> possesses a strategic understanding of the role, purpose and administration of the ATO as well as excellent insight into environmental factors affecting the organisation
> has excellent stakeholder relationship skills, including the ability to provide insightful, persuasive and trusted advice to a diverse range of senior stakeholders
> will be IIA–certified, eg Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) through the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). A related information technology certification, eg Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) will be highly regarded
> leads by example, embodying the culture to which we aspire.

The role will be offered as a non-ongoing opportunity in Canberra. The successful candidate will be appointed for a period of three to five years and will be subject to a probation period of nine months.

We offer a competitive total remuneration package (including allowances and superannuation) in the range of $230,246 to $266,374 per annum, depending on experience.
