Job Description


The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) is seeking to fill two SES Band 1 Group Head positions within the Health Group and Housing and Specialised Services Group (HSSG).

The Health Group has responsibility for monitoring and surveillance of chronic diseases, risk factors and the health of particular population groups and undertaking a wide range of novel and complex analyses and reporting projects, including using linked data. The Health group works closely with stakeholders to identify data and analysis needs, and takes custodianship of national data sets and disease registers for mortality, diabetes, mesothelioma, cancer and screening.

The HSSG develops and reports national data to support monitoring and reporting on the health and welfare of, and provision of services to, a range of vulnerable populations. This includes people who are homeless or require housing assistance, and people who use drug and alcohol services. The HSSG is responsible for the maintenance of several major annually-collected national data collections. This includes the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Services; Specialist Homelessness Services; and Housing Data Sets. HSSG is also responsible for two surveys: the National Drug Strategy Household Survey and the National Social Housing Survey.

The Group Heads will report to either the CEO or Deputy CEO and provide leadership and technical expertise to their relevant Group. The Group Head’s key duties will be to:

• Provide technical expertise and experience relevant to the Group’s program of work
• Develop, formulate and lead the strategic direction of the Group
• Oversee the management of a program of work by teams of specialist staff within the Group
• Build effective partnerships and good working relationships with Commonwealth and State agencies and relevant non-Government organisations and pursue key opportunities to develop information infrastructures and provide data access and analysis services in areas of strategic importance to the Institute
• Participate as a member of the Executive and contribute to the development of the Institute’s strategic directions and overall management
