Job Description

Duties


The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) provides independent and final merits review of a range of Australian government decisions. The AAT’s Migration and Refugee Division (MRD) reviews decisions about visas to travel to, enter or stay in Australia (including protection, student, partner, family, visitor, business and skilled visas) and other visa related decisions. The MRD Legal Services section is responsible for providing a range of legal support services to AAT members and staff. The section has staff in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

We currently have a vacancy for an APS6 Legal Officer in our Melbourne office, and possible future vacancy at APS5 level. The Legal Officer provides legal advice and support to members and staff of the AAT, primarily relating to reviews in the MRD.

APS6 Legal Officer

The APS6 Legal Officer provides specialist and more complex legal advice on administrative law and other relevant issues to the AAT, with a particular focus on migration and refugee law.

The position will work under limited supervision and maintain consistent quality of work within set timeframes including conducting analysis and research for more complex legal advice and decisions. The role also requires applying strong written and verbal communication to liaise and develop more complex stakeholder relationships including conducting training and professional development sessions on legal issues for members and staff.

APS5 Legal Officer

The APS5 Legal Officer provides professional legal advice on administrative law and other relevant issues to the AAT, with a particular focus on migration and refugee law. The role will involve undertaking research and analysis to provide accurate advice in the context of moderately complex legal work.

The role requires planning and managing workload within set timeframes to ensure work area outcomes and expectations are met. The position also requires applying strong written and verbal communication to collaboratively work with other staff in the MRD Legal Services section and liaise and develop relationships with other stakeholders, including conducting training sessions with other Legal Officers or Senior Legal Officers on legal issues for members and staff.

Eligibility


The AAT generally requires Australian citizenship as a condition of engagement. All employees who are engaged are required to undertake an Australian Federal Police Check. Employees who are engaged on an ongoing basis are required to undertake a health assessment.

Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

This role will initially be filled on a non-ongoing basis for up to 12 months with the possibility of extension. The position may become ongoing subject to organisational needs.

An order of merit established through this selection process may be used to fill this or future vacancies on a non-ongoing or ongoing basis.

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has offices located in all states of Australia and the Australian Capital Territory and provides independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government, some non-government bodies and the Norfolk Island Government.

On 1 July 2015 the Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal and Social Security Appeals Tribunal were merged with the AAT. The amalgamated AAT comprises a number of Divisions: Social Services and Child Support, Migration and Refugee, and General and Other.
