The Opportunity

The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is a newly established agency, which will lead and coordinate the Australian Government’s policy design, implementation and service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The NIAA is looking for an individual to fill the vacancy of Chief Operating Officer (COO). As the COO, you will contribute to strengthening the NIAA as a contemporary, responsive and fit-for-purpose organisation that provides outstanding service to the government and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through delivery of policy advice and programme delivery. You will play a key role in strategic planning, developing and implementing agency initiatives and developing corporate governance arrangements.

The role will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and will be accountable for the management of resources across the NIAA, including the Indigenous Advancement Strategy, Administered budget.

Our Ideal Candidate

The NIAA is seeking an established and inspiring senior leader with well-developed corporate skills from the public, private and/or community sectors to join the leadership team. Our ideal candidate will be confident, adaptable to change, possess excellent stakeholder and people management skills, and be able to consider multiple options to resolve complex issues to ensure government objectives are achieved. You will have a proven record of working collaboratively with your peers, (internal and external). You will be innovative, consultative, resilient and personally accountable for the quality of advice and the delivery of results.

As the inaugural COO in the NIAA, you will be have the opportunity to shape and build enabling functions across HR, IT, Finance, Legal, Property, Security, Communications and Shared Services arrangements.

You will develop and implement key governance frameworks and tools, agency risk management policies and frameworks and develop talent management and a capability strategies. As the COO, you will have oversight of the financial arrangements for the annual agency budget of approximately $200 million and a yearly administered budget of approximately $1.27 billion.

Relevant qualifications in a finance discipline (including CPA/CA) and experience in public sector finance is highly desirable.

The occupant of this position is considered an Officer under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and is required to exercise due diligence in complying with their obligations under this Act.
