Job Description


Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) is the Australian Government’s central legal service and part of the Attorney-General’s Department. It is a centre of excellence and expertise in areas of law of importance to the Commonwealth and in managing complex, systemic and precedential issues for the Commonwealth. AGS has offices in every capital city and a complement of approximately 370 lawyers who practise principally in the areas of: public law; dispute resolution and law enforcement; and commercial law.

AGS is a self-funded legal practice and competes in the market for the majority of its legal work.

AGS Commercial has more than 60 lawyers around Australia who provide commercial legal services to the Commonwealth and its agencies. Our dynamic and diverse practice works across the full spectrum of the Commonwealth’s activities and supports the Commonwealth’s most high-profile and complex national transactions, programs and reforms.

We are dedicated to the public interest and bring a unique whole-of-government approach to all of our work. Our work includes the implementation of large Commonwealth infrastructure, property, construction and investment projects, the establishment and governance of Commonwealth entities and major public policies and programs, the protection of the Commonwealth’s interests in the design and conduct of innovative procurement, grant and other commercial processes.

The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for one or more commercial lawyers interested in a rewarding career at a Partner-equivalent (SES Band 1) level within the Commonwealth’s Senior Executive Service.

A successful applicant will take on senior professional and leadership responsibilities in the AGS Commercial practice and possess the following skills and attributes:

• a strong desire and capacity to work in the Commonwealth as a trusted client advisor on commercial matters of national importance, with previous experience advising Commonwealth clients preferable but not essential
• superior legal and analytic skills, high quality commercial (which may include property) law expertise and the ability to lead legal teams working on large and complex commercial transactions
• the ability to ‘think outside the box’ and provide innovative and client-focused solutions
• demonstrated ability to make a significant contribution to the success of AGS’ commercial practice and to develop and maintain strong client relationships
• the ability to work in a forward-thinking team and the capacity to support, supervise and mentor more junior lawyers within a demanding environment.

A role may be ongoing or for a specified term, depending on business requirements, and unless agreed otherwise is a full- time role at the Senior Executive Lawyer (SES Band 1) level.

Salary will be negotiated with a successful applicant based on their skills and experience.

Location will be dependent on business requirements.
