The role requires you to provide strong leadership to division staff and effective management of the Division’s Executive team by managing the resources of the division, and enhancing organisational capability through leadership of people.

The role requires substantial work experience in the complex field of government budget processes. It also requires demonstrated working experience with internal and external partners to achieve program outcomes through the current budget cycle/ fiscal policy.

The ideal person in this role must have a strong sense of the political, financial and environmental trends and developments affecting policy and decision-making, including for social policy in particular, and the relationship of that context with complex fiscal issues.

This role actively develops productive working relations across line and plays a key role in providing persuasive advice to resolve divergent views and conflicting priorities.

This role operates in a complex and shifting environment that is subject to the fiscal drivers and outcomes of the Government. The successful candidate will need to identify long-term trends, consider emerging trends in the context of the Government’s agenda and as such, operate in an environment characterised by complex problem solving requiring innovative solutions.

As the First Assistant Secretary (SES Band 2), you will support the Deputy Secretary providing high-level policy advice to the Ministers and the Secretary, and manage a broad range of functions and services, which are the responsibility of the division.

You will represent the department in a wide range of public forums and in high-level discussions and negotiations with key stakeholders and work closely with the department’s executive.

You will play a key role in strategic planning, developing and implementing departmental initiatives and strengthening corporate governance thereby enhancing the department’s capability to respond to the needs of its stakeholders. You will also actively promote and engage with the ongoing transformation of the department whilst driving and implementing reform in a rapidly changing public sector environment.

You will also contribute to and communicate the strategic direction of the department. Your strong leadership credentials and ability to engender trust and respect will be complemented by sound judgement, a strong focus on results, and the ability to solve complex issues.
