Duties


The Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) have partnered with Hays exclusively, to offer this exciting opportunity. AGS is a group within the Attorney-General’s Department and is the Commonwealth Government’s central legal service. It is a centre of excellence and expertise in areas of law of importance to the Commonwealth and in managing complex, systemic and precedential issues for the Commonwealth. AGS has offices in every capital city and a complement of approximately 350 lawyers who practice principally in the areas of: government, constitutional and administrative law; dispute resolution and law enforcement; and corporate and commercial law.

As the Financial Controller you will actively work to maintain high standards of work, be hands on and perform tasks inclusive of but not limited to the following:

• Help to develop and manage budgets which address key business needs including an emphasis on revenue opportunities and managing costs.
• Identify and implement agreed cost reduction strategies and opportunities for AGS. Contribute to the development of strategies ensuring AGS remains competitive and achieves desired financial outcomes.
• Ability to interpret and apply complex frameworks or standards (for example accounting standards, tax regulations, Department of Finance / whole of government requirements, etc.).
• Prepare clear and concise written correspondence. This includes developing written materials for submission to the AGS Management Committee or other key stakeholders in AGS / AGD.
• Successfully develop, manage and get the best out of your team. Take an active role in the professional development of team members. Support and assist team members when work demands require.
• Be the key contact point for the external and internal auditors and ensure that all audits run smoothly and on time.
• Financial accounting including the timely and accurate production of information for external reports, general ledger reconciliations and transaction analysis. Actively manage WIP and debt to ensure business targets are met.
• Continuously monitor and improve existing financial systems and processes to ensure optimal business efficiency and automation.
• Actively contribute to the design, build, testing, change management and go-live of new systems / processes.
• Ensure all internal and external reporting requirements are met within desired deadlines.

 

Eligibility


To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department applicants must be Australian citizens.

Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.

To qualify for this role, you must possess relevant qualifications and have obtained CA/CPA qualification.
