The Vision of the National Gallery is to inspire every Australian to experience creativity and learning through art. Our Mission is to lead a progressive national cultural agenda by championing art and its value in our lives.

A new position to lead a progressive cultural agenda

The National Gallery of Australia based in Canberra is Australia’s national cultural institution for the visual arts and plays a leadership role in shaping visual arts culture across Australia and the region. Through the national collection, exhibitions, learning and public programs, outreach initiatives, research and publications, the National Gallery is a model of excellence in furthering knowledge of the visual arts nationally and internationally.

The Assistant Director, Indigenous Engagement is a new leadership role, reporting to the Director. We are looking for someone that has a deep understanding and experience with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values and community, who will be central to advocating and advancing Indigenous culture through the visual arts at the National Gallery at a national level and internationally.

The National Gallery is in a period of great change and we are seeking a person with energy and passion to be part of a team which will lead a progressive cultural agenda for Australia.

You will be a crucial figure in forming the intellectual and organisational culture of the National Gallery as it progresses in building on its important legacy to lead the national cultural agenda and Indigenous engagement. As an experienced and influential leader, you will be skilled at engaging and working in a collaborative and inclusive style, but comfortable in driving key initiatives.

Further shaping the National Gallery’s Indigenous engagement and developing and implementing our Reconciliation Action Plan are significant objectives in this role. You will also strengthen stakeholder relationships across government, community and corporate entities, leverage personal networks and oversee current significant partnerships with Wesfarmers Arts and the Indigenous Arts Leadership Program.
