Job Description


We are seeking to fill several ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies across a range of policy and operational functions.

We will also establish a merit pool that may be used to fill future vacancies over the next 12 months.

As a Policy Officer (APS 5 classification) or Senior Policy Officer (APS 6 classification), you will be expected to assist with policy development and project management, including engaging with stakeholders.
The positions are important ones in a small agency of 12 staff based primarily in Sydney with satellite offices in Canberra and Brisbane.
The positions may also require the providing of secretariat services and participating in a number of internal and external committees as well as supporting corporate administration functions.

Key duties

• Perform research and analysis relating to asbestos safety, awareness and management
• Draft well researched policy advice that aligns with the National Strategic Plan for Asbestos Management and Awareness
• Prepare draft reports, briefs and other documents
• Co-ordinate contract management including developing tender documentation managing selection processes and addressing contractor performance issues
• Liaise, consult and negotiate with expert groups and a range of stakeholders
• If required, provide secretariat, administration and corporate assistance and participate in a number of internal and external committees.

• Anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations.
• Understand, interpret and communicate complex technical information, to a non-technical audience
• Communicate policy and technical information through a variety of mediums (written, oral, visual etc.)
• Develop a detailed understanding of the issues around the risks of exposure to asbestos and asbestos management including remaining abreast of new sector trends and developments.

Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.

The ability to obtain and/or maintain a baseline clearance is required.


Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

Non-Ongoing position will be offered for a term of 12 months.
