Job Description


We are looking for a high performer to fill an Associate position in our Hobart Registry.

The role primarily provides administrative and legal support to members of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) through ensuring the efficient and effective conduct of hearings, assisting with the preparation and legal editing of decisions and drafting directions, interlocutory orders and correspondence.

Our ideal candidate has a high standard of written and oral communication skills. Candidates should also have well-developed legal research skills and be able to manage competing demands.

The AAT generally requires Australian citizenship as a condition of engagement. All employees who are engaged are required to undertake an Australian Federal Police Check.

Applicants must have completed, or substantially completed, a recognised degree in Law obtained from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Registrar, is appropriate to the duties of the office.

Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

The non-ongoing opportunities will be offered for a specified term of up to 12 months with a possibility of extension. An order of merit established through this selection process may be used to fill this or future vacancies on a non-ongoing basis.

About Administrative Appeals Tribunal 

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has offices located in all states of Australia and the Australian Capital Territory and provides independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government, some non-government bodies and the Norfolk Island Government.

On 1 July 2015 the Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal and Social Security Appeals Tribunal were merged with the AAT. The amalgamated AAT comprises a number of Divisions: Social Services and Child Support, Migration and Refugee, and General and Other.
