Duties


The Department of Defence seeks to be a leader in sustainable environmental management and is responsible for managing a large estate containing a diverse range of landscapes, key fauna and flora species, and heritage values.

Service Delivery Division, Northern and Central Zone, is currently seeking an experienced senior environmental professional to join the Defence Environment and Sustainability Team based in SA (Adelaide).

The Environment and Sustainability Manager (ESM) is a senior role within the Defence Environment and Sustainability Team. The role involves the oversight, input and implementation of a broad range of environmental and heritage programs, policy and initiatives to support the sustainable use and management of the Defence estate. Aboriginal stakeholder engagement and liaison, and the management of Aboriginal heritage values and sites are key role inclusions.

Key outcomes of the Environment and Sustainability Manager role includes
• Providing environment and heritage legislative, policy and technical advice;
• Undertaking environmental assessments and approvals associated with infrastructure projects and military activities;
• Undertaking a broad range of stakeholder engagement, consultation and liaison;
• Undertaking environmental compliance, risk and incident management;
• Undertaking contract and financial management;
• Contributing to the implementation of Defence environmental policy and strategies;
• Leading and managing a small team; and
• Operating within an information and spatial management system.

The role involves a mix of office and site based work, and travel to regional and remote Defence operational sites and Training Areas is required. Off-road 4WDriving may be required at some locations.

You should consider applying for this position if you
• Are an experienced environmental professional with extensive relevant experience in the field of environment management.
• Possess multidisciplinary skills in the environmental and heritage field with demonstrated experience in providing advice, environmental assessment and approvals, risk identification and management, interpretation and application of environmental legislation and policy, and the implementation of environmental management plans and programs.
• Have a sound understanding of the relevant environmental legislative context.
• Enjoy collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders to develop pragmatic solutions and achieve positive environmental outcomes.
• Possess great communication and engagement / liaison skills.
• Can make informed strategic decisions, considering a range of competing priorities.
• Are motivated to develop professionally and stay informed of local and national organisational and environmental issues.
