Senior Executive Lawyer – Property

• Canberra based with national travel

Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) is the Commonwealth Government’s central legal service and part of the Attorney-General’s Department. It is a centre of excellence and expertise in areas of law of importance to the Commonwealth and in managing complex, systemic and precedential issues for the Commonwealth. AGS has offices in every capital city and approximately 370 lawyers who practise principally in the areas of public law, dispute resolution and law enforcement, and commercial law.

AGS is a self-funded, fee-for-service Commonwealth trading enterprise competing in the market for the great majority of its work. Our lawyers have time-recording responsibilities and billable targets. We have a strong focus on providing excellent legal advice and representation, outstanding client service and on being effective and efficient in our business operations.

An opportunity has arisen for a senior property lawyer to join our Commercial practice. The role will provide commercial legal advice on a broad range of property, and ideally also construction, matters for clients across the Commonwealth government. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the commercial business success of the practice.

This Senior Executive Lawyer role is a full-time position within the Senior Executive Service at the Band 1 level. It reports to the Deputy Chief Counsel and is supported by, and mentors and supervises, more junior lawyers.

Individuals wishing to be considered for this opportunity will need to meet the general APS SES requirements and have attributes including:

- a high level of expertise, and extensive experience in, property, and ideally also construction law (ideally 10 to 15 years)
- a strong interest and proven track record in proactive business-winning and business development
- significant experience advising on and managing significant complex property/construction projects for Commonwealth Government entities
- excellent client relationship-building skills and a reputation for working collaboratively internally and with clients and other stakeholders.
