The Home Affairs Portfolio, including the Department of Home Affairs, brings together Australia’s federal law enforcement, national and transport security, criminal justice, emergency management, multicultural affairs and immigration and border-related functions and agencies, working together to keep Australia safe.

The Department is seeking to fill the role of Assistant Secretary Media and Engagement

The Media and Engagement Branch is a centralised function that provides strategic and tactical media and communication advice for the Department of Home Affairs, Australian Border Force and Portfolio Ministers. The Branch is responsible for managing all media engagement and monitoring, and the delivery of external communication activities including campaigns, major media events and speeches. The Branch also has an in-house graphic design and production capability.

The role is accountable for the management of all media and external communication operations including engagement with journalists and media outlets and reports directly to the First Assistant Secretary Executive Coordination.

To be a strong contender for this role, you will need to be forward thinking, self-motivated, resilient and adept at building relationships in a large, complex and fast paced environment. You will be able to work through complex issues and identify innovative solutions. Your integrity, judgement, and leadership credentials will be paramount. You will have a strong focus on results and be skilled at managing sensitive issues of public interest. Experience working in or the ability to quickly acquire a sound understanding of the national security environment will be highly regarded.

You will have highly developed strategic and analytical skills, and a sound working knowledge of the Australian Government and its policies and parliamentary processes. You will have a demonstrated understanding of public information strategies and campaigns, and be able to closely link media strategies and priorities with the Government’s and Department’s objectives.

The Assistant Secretary Media and Engagement is accountable for the Department’s and ABF’s public statements in the media and therefore must demonstrate exceptional communication and management skills.



The successful candidate must be an Australian citizen, successfully undergo the Department’s Employment Suitability Clearance process and must establish and maintain a security clearance at a minimum level of Negative Vetting 2.
