Over the next few years, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is expected to grow and develop as a modern regulator and this will offer an exciting opportunity for someone with vision and courage to further develop the organisation’s workforce culture and capability. The ACCC enjoys very strong employee engagement, currently ranked 7th across all APS agencies. It has a workforce which embraces change and a management team that is keen to adopt best practice policies relating to people.

The operational workforce is highly qualified, consisting of mostly employees with law, economics or business qualifications. They often work in a demanding, deadline driven environment and so human resource support needs to accommodate this in its service delivery.

About the ACCC’s People & Culture Branch

The People & Culture Branch has grown in terms of its capability and role within the organisation. It has made significant progress in developing its strategic role and efforts in being the engineers and architects of people initiatives. It has been instrumental in crafting frameworks, programs and policies for the organisation that support a culture of inclusiveness, flexibility and mobility. Employees who work in the branch have an appetite to work with the business as business partners that drive real change in the organisation.

About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the role is responsible for ensuring a high performing and effective People and Culture branch that delivers creative, efficient and effective employee-centred services.

The role will provide strategic leadership to the organisation, improving organisational capability and performance through the identification, development and implementation of strategic people initiatives that align to the ACCC and AER’s corporate and operational plans.

As a senior leader in a specialised role, the role provides advice on issues such as performance management, employee engagement, change management, leadership and talent development, employee relations and attraction and retention strategies.


• Provide strategic and technical advice to senior management and other internal and external stakeholders in relation to culture and people issues across the breadth of human resource functions in the organisation.

• Ensure the employment and industrial risks are managed and mitigated.

• Ensure the organisation remains high-reaching and that its workforce practices reflect contemporary industry practices in areas such as employee engagement, leadership development, employee well-being, performance management, HR metrics and other key Human resource initiatives.

• Lead and drive the people, physical and financial resources of the branch to achieve efficiency and effectiveness in people management and services

• Ensure branch employees develop a deep knowledge of the business of ACCC/AER so they can add-value to the work of the organisation.

• This position is designated as an ‘Officer’ under the ‘Work Health and Safety Act 2011’ and is required to exercise due diligence in accordance with the Act.
