Job Description


The role of the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is to develop and implement policies and programs that ensure Australia's agricultural, fisheries, food and forestry industries remain competitive, profitable and sustainable, and supports the sustainable and productive management and use of rivers and water resources. The department also plays a central role in safeguarding Australia’s animal and plant health from exotic pests and diseases.

The Jobs
The department is seeking to fill current and anticipated Assistant Secretary vacancies across its policy, program and corporate functions. As an Assistant Secretary you will be a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the broader strategic leadership of the organisation. You will lead a Branch providing high quality policy, program and corporate advice and delivery. You will work in close collaboration with other Divisions in the department, other APS agencies and external stakeholders to deliver on government policy, departmental outcomes and broader cross-agency objectives.

The roles require a demonstrated ability to build organisational capability, innovate, anticipate future needs and respond. You will need to be a strategic thinker and possess a clear-sighted understanding of Australia's interests and challenges in the domestic and global contexts. High functioning conceptual, analytical, negotiation and representational skills will be important attributes of successful candidates.

Key accountabilities of these roles include:

• collaborating with other divisions in the department, other APS agencies and external stakeholders to deliver on departmental outcomes and broader objectives
• providing high quality advice and leadership in the development, implementation and measurement of future directions and strategies for the department
• enhancing and building the good reputation of the department, including through representation at public and professional forums
• contributing substantively as part of the department’s Executive leadership team
• promoting workplace practices consistent with the APS Values, modelling high quality leadership and management practices, and creating a dynamic, flexible and collegiate workplace culture.


Tertiary qualifications (and/or demonstrated equivalent experience) in a relevant field will be well regarded.


An executive package which reflects the responsibilities of the positions will be negotiated with the successful applicants. The successful applicants may be offered ongoing or non-ongoing employment.

The successful applicants may be offered full-time or part-time employment. Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

The positions are being advertised as non-ongoing or ongoing. If offered on a non-ongoing basis the successful applicants will be initially engaged for a period of two years with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of five years in total.
