Job Description


The Department of Education and Training (the department) serves the government in developing national policies and programmes in childcare and early childhood education, school education, higher education, vocational education and training, international education and research.

The department is seeking an experienced and professional Deputy Chief Financial Officer (DCFO) to provide strategic financial advice to the department’s Executive, manage the department’s budget allocations and statutory financial reporting requirements and lead the Finance and Business Services Branch.

The DCFO is responsible for providing high level accounting and financial management information and advice to the Department’s Secretary, Executive, Governance Committees and the department. The role is essential to the department’s obligations to meet statutory financial reporting obligations, for managing the internal budgeting and costing framework, and the development and on-going maintenance of the Accountable Authority Instructions.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the DCFO is a key point of contact and advice on budget and financial issues. A key expectation of this role is an ability to negotiate, collaborate and interpret service requests balancing people’s needs with practical and useful solutions.

You will be a highly motivated leader with well-developed management, leadership and change management skills to motivate and lead your team. You will be forward-looking, self-motivated and have the ability to identify and assess emerging issues, as well as the ability to manage multiple, high profile issues. You will possess well-developed stakeholder management capability and the capacity to work to Executive, Ministers and other key stakeholders.

This is a designated security assessed position. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security assessment at the Negative Vetting 1 level.

Relevant qualifications in a finance discipline, CPA/CA qualified and experience in public sector finance is essential.
