Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) is the Australian Government’s central legal service and part of the Attorney-General’s Department. It is a centre of excellence and expertise in areas of law of importance to the Commonwealth and in managing complex, systemic and precedential issues for the Commonwealth. AGS has offices in every capital city and a complement of approximately 370 lawyers who practise principally in the areas of: public law; dispute resolution and law enforcement; and commercial law.

AGS is a self-funded fee-for-service Commonwealth trading enterprise competing in the market for the great majority of its work. Our lawyers have time recording responsibilities and billable targets. We have a strong focus on providing excellent legal advice and representation, outstanding client service and on being effective and efficient in our business operations.

AGS Commercial has more than 60 lawyers around Australia who specialise in providing commercial and property-related legal services. Our dynamic practice supports some of the Commonwealth’s most high-profile and complex national projects and our services range over large-scale procurements, tenders and contracts, probity and legal process, ICT projects, intellectual property, grants and funding, media and communications, environment and resources, construction and infrastructure projects and property and leasing.

About the role
AGS Commercial is seeking applications for an ongoing Senior Executive Lawyer (SESB1) in our Sydney office.

The successful applicant will take on senior professional and leadership responsibilities in Commercial’s Sydney/Brisbane team, demonstrating high quality expertise in general commercial law. They will have excellent business development skills with a track record of building their own significant commercial practice through proactive business winning activities and development and maintenance of strong client relationships.

You will also be an excellent manager and supervisor who invests in supporting the career progression of more junior lawyers. You will work closely with Team Leaders, National Mangers, and the most senior lawyers across AGS to deliver superior legal service and value for money to clients. You must be able to work as an effective member of a project team with other AGS lawyers and with senior clients.

The position operates at a strategic level in a complex environment under limited direction and exercises AGS Senior Executive Lawyer (SEL) legal and financial delegations.

The successful applicant will hold a tertiary legal qualification (with a strong academic record), be admitted to practise law in Australia and possess the following skills and experience:

• substantial practical experience working on significant and complex commercial transactions
• substantial post admission experience in commercial practice for Commonwealth government clients is essential
• proven ability to make a significant contribution to the business success of Commercial including actively engaging in marketing and business winning, as well as identifying emerging business opportunities and supporting delivery of new legal services to clients
• substantial experience in strategically managing a legal team and demonstrated capacity to provide leadership, supervision and mentoring which supports the development and retention of high performing lawyers working in a competitive business environment
• demonstrated experience in drafting a wide range of contracts and other commercial documentation, including procurement documents
• demonstrated ability or commitment to making a significant contribution to commercial business success of the practice group, including achievement of personal revenue expectations
• demonstrated ability to ‘think outside the box’ to develop original, innovative and practical solutions for clients
• extensive legal, analytical and problem solving skills and negotiation expertise.

Remuneration
This is an ongoing full time role at the Senior Executive Lawyer (SESB1) level.
Salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant depending on their skills and experience.
