Duties


This is a great opportunity to work closely with other legal professionals, in a co-managed team across a diverse and interesting in-house practice.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience of legal practice and hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution. The candidate will have proven skills in providing high quality legal advice in a diverse range of contexts specifically, regulatory law and, preferably, knowledge of and experience in government legal issues, including administrative law, statutory interpretation, FOI and government contracting and procurement, and litigation.

The candidate will also have skills in strategic thinking and judgement, clear and accurate communication, ability to build and maintain relationships and people management skills.

The duties for the position include working with the General Counsel/Deputy General Counsel and in close consultation with your PLO co-manager, to oversee and undertake complex legal tasks for which the General Counsel Branch is responsible. The candidate will also be responsible for supervising senior legal officers and legal officers, assist in capacity building and training activities, and assist with general management of the branch (including budge, resources and personnel).

The General Counsel Branch is responsible for coordination, oversight and management of legal advice, policy input and support for the Department. The General Counsel Branch has two sections, each of which has primary responsibility for specific functions and/or Divisions within the Department. Each section is co-managed by two Principal Legal Officers and includes Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers. Alongside the legal functions, we are also responsible for Legislation and FOI coordination and management, as well as
supporting Regulatory Maturity.

The Regulatory Environment and Litigation section is responsible for functions such as legislation liaison, constitutional risk, litigation and dispute resolution etc. The section also supports a variety of Divisions such as Environmental Standards Division, Biodiversity Conservation Division and the Office of Compliance.

The successful candidate will require the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
