Job Description


The PBO is seeking an experienced economist to lead a small team on specific projects as part of the PBO’s research program, and support the overall leadership of the Fiscal Policy Analysis Division. Drawing on your fiscal policy, budgetary and/or modelling expertise, you will help to further enhance the division’s quantitative analysis and modelling capability to ensure that PBO publications are of the highest analytical quality and are well considered. You will maintain strong, productive relationships with Commonwealth entities, peak bodies, academics and industry leaders to ensure that the PBO draws upon expertise from a range of sources. As an experienced manager, you will actively build staff capability while also encouraging an appropriate level of delegation.

As part of the Executive team at the PBO, you will have an important role in contributing to the setting and communication of the strategic direction for the organisation.

Duties of the position include:
• contributing to the overall strategic direction of the PBO through the Executive Committee
• providing high quality fiscal policy and modelling expertise to the PBO’s Fiscal Policy Analysis Division
• being accountable for the delivery of key research projects under the annual work plan
• assisting the First Assistant Parliamentary Budget Officer in developing and implementing a forward-looking strategic plan for the division, including designing and driving the PBO’s research program to improve the public understanding of fiscal policy issues and challenges
• supporting the delivery of the post-election report of election commitments
• representing the Parliamentary Budget Office to stakeholders, before parliamentary committees and in Australian and international fora.


You are required to have:
• strong leadership credentials and extensive experience in undertaking economic, financial and budget analysis and/or modelling
• excellent knowledge of the structure of the Commonwealth budget and a strong understanding of the drivers of Commonwealth revenue and expenditure
• relevant tertiary qualifications
• the ability to work with utmost discretion and confidentiality.
