Job Description

The Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the department) is seeking an experienced and professional Chief Information Officer (CIO) to provide strategic support between technology and the organisation and lead the department’s ICT transformation agenda. The CIO will be responsible for leading the department’s ICT transformation towards a data-driven and evidence-based approach to policy design and decision making. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated leader with well-developed change management skills, who can work effectively with internal and external stakeholders to deliver innovative and efficient ICT solutions.

The department is seeking a dynamic SES Band 1 officer for the role of Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting to the Group Manager, Finance, Technology and Business Services, you will lead the Department’s ICT transformation agenda, developing new services aligned with whole-of-government initiatives such as Solution Design and Engineering and User Research and Engagement, and provide ICT security advice to reflect the Department’s cloud-provisioning approach.

The role presents an exciting opportunity to help shape the strategic alignment between technology and the Organisation’s support of a data-driven and evidence-based approach to policy design and decision making. You will work in partnership with the department’s business areas to develop and manage major business applications and deliver innovative and efficient technology solutions that are aligned with the department’s ICT strategic direction and business area needs.

The appointee will have advanced ICT knowledge and skills as well as public administration expertise acquired through significant professional and management experience. Ideally, this will include a comprehensive grasp of ICT processes and context for the public sector, an understanding of government policy development and implementation, and issues impacting the broader portfolio environment. Excellent representational and relationship management skills are essential to the role, as is demonstrated experience in successfully leading large teams (100+ staff).

Before applying, please obtain selection documentation by emailing quoting the appropriate Ref. No.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security assessment at the Negative Vetting 1 level.

Under Section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999 employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS, unless the Agency delegate has agreed in writing.
