Job Description

Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) is the Australian Government’s central legal service and part of the Attorney-General’s Department. It is a centre of excellence and expertise in areas of law of importance to the Commonwealth and in managing complex, systemic and precedential issues for the Commonwealth. AGS has offices in every capital city and a complement of approximately 350 lawyers who practise principally in the areas of public law, dispute resolution and law enforcement, and commercial law.

AGS is a self-funded fee-for-service Commonwealth trading enterprise comprising three practice areas - The Office of General Counsel (OGC), Dispute Resolution (DR) and Commercial - which compete for the majority of their work. Our lawyers have time recording responsibilities and billable targets. We have a strong focus on providing excellent legal advice and representation, outstanding client service, and being effective and efficient in our business operations.

DR provides specialist expertise in resolving and managing disputes – through litigation and alternative dispute resolution. We provide advice and act in all types of matters, across a range of areas of law and across jurisdictions – from small claims and disputes, to the largest and most sensitive litigation matters in which the Commonwealth is involved.

OGC specialises in the provision of legal advice and assistance to the Commonwealth spanning the spectrum of the Commonwealth’s activities across all portfolios. OGC’s team has specialist expertise in constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation and the development, implementation and administration of legislation. OGC also conducts constitutional litigation in the High Court and clears the Commonwealth’s position in other cases involving constitutional issues.

AGS Commercial specialises in providing commercial and property-related legal services. The practice supports some of the Commonwealth’s most high-profile and complex national projects and our services range over large-scale procurements, tenders and contracts, probity and legal process, ICT projects, intellectual property, grants and funding, media and communications, environment and resources, and construction and infrastructure projects and property and leasing.
