About the Position

The ARC is looking to fill the Branch Manager of the Research Excellence Branch.
The Branch Manager of the Research Excellence Branch is responsible for overseeing and driving the agencies delivery of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation, and the development and implementation of a new national assessment of Engagement and Impact (EI) of university research.
ERA evaluates the quality of the research undertaken in Australian universities against national and international benchmarks. The ratings are determined and moderated by committees of distinguished researchers, drawn from Australia and overseas. The Engagement and Impact assessment is a new initiative announced under the National Innovation and Science Agenda.

Duties and Tasks

• Provide leadership, guidance and direction to the branch
• Oversee the planning and development of the branches resources and budget
• Supervise and mentor employees, by providing regular feedback and supporting the continual development of employee capability
• Oversee the management of services delivered by the branch; including the effective evaluation of research quality and the continual development of the engagement and impact of university research
• Ensure governance responsibilities are adhered to and best practices are adopted in the delivery of projects and services by the branch
• Represent the agency in public forums, negotiations and meetings with external stakeholders
• Provide strategic advice and input to senior management in relation to the work of the branch
• Promote workplace practices consistent with ARC policy and in accordance with APS values and leadership behaviours

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Ability to effectively lead, manage and shape a branch with research evaluation and research engagement and impact functions
• Ability to interpret policies and strategies and translate into operational goals
• Ability to achieve results through building organisational capability and responsiveness
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to negotiate effectively and represent the Agency in a wide variety of forums

Qualifications/Special Requirements
An understanding of the Higher Education Sector, research evaluation and research engagement and impact is highly desirable.

To be eligible for employment with the ARC, you must be an Australian Citizen.
The preferred applicant will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and hold or obtain and maintain a security clearance to the required level.
