Job Description


The Administrative Appeals Tribunal is seeking an Administrative Assistant Legal (AAL) to provide high level support to its members.

The role ensures the efficient and effective conduct of hearings through timely liaison with parties, recording and safe keeping of exhibits, swearing in witnesses and recording orders.

You will assist with the preparation and legal editing of AAT decisions and draft directions, interlocutory orders and correspondence. You will undertake legal research which may include pre-hearing liaison with parties and case management of files.

Our ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have strong organisational skills. Your research skills and attention to detail will be sound and you will work both autonomously and as part of a small team.

Importantly you will have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to liaise with AAT clients, members, other staff as well as parties to applications and their representatives.

The AAT generally requires Australian citizenship as a condition of engagement.

All employees who are engaged for a period of over six months are required to undertake an Australian Federal Police Check.

This position will be offered for a period of up to 12 months with a possibility of extension of up to three years.

About Administrative Appeals Tribunal 

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has offices located in all states of Australia and the Australian Capital Territory and provides independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government, some non-government bodies and the Norfolk Island Government.

On 1 July 2015 the Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal and Social Security Appeals Tribunal were merged with the AAT. The amalgamated AAT comprises a number of Divisions: Social Services and Child Support, Migration and Refugee, and General and Other.
