Job Description


The Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) promotes an improved workplace relations framework in Australia’s building and construction industry. Our goal is to ensure that employers and employees covered by this framework can work fairly, efficiently and productively. Key laws we work with are the Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Act 2016 (BCIIP Act), the Fair Work Act 2009 (Fair Work Act), the Building Code 2013, the Code for the Tendering and Performance of Building Work 2016 (Building Code 2016) and other workplace relations laws relating to the building and construction industry.

Investigators are primarily responsible for undertaking assessments, investigations and audits into breaches of these Commonwealth laws and other laws relating to the building and construction industry. APS 4 Investigators will have some experience conducting investigations and/or audits, an ability to interpret and apply the law, well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, a capacity to work well individually and as a team member, and be able to deal with conflict in a professional manner.

Investigators must be prepared to travel interstate for up to a number of weeks at a time for operational training or to assist in other ABCC offices. They must also hold a current driver’s licence.

The successful applicant will be appointed as an Inspector under the BCIIP Act.


Australian citizenship is required for employment at the ABCC.

To be eligible for employment all preferred candidates are required to undergo pre-employment screening. Screening checks include character, security and health clearances. Some positions may require additional checks to be performed and require a security clearance.
