Job Description

Duties

The Home Affairs Portfolio, including the Department of Home Affairs, was established in December 2017. The Portfolio brings together Australia's federal law enforcement, national and transport security, criminal justice, emergency management, multicultural affairs and immigration and border-related functions and agencies, working together to keep Australia safe. Working in the Department of Home Affairs offers the opportunity to be part of a new portfolio designed to meet this fundamental challenge; requiring the Portfolio of Home Affairs and all its components including the Department of Home Affairs to work as one and embrace collaboration, comradery, diversity and equal opportunity.

The Department’s endeavours can only be met through our people combined with strong and effective leadership. These Assistant Secretary (SES Band 1) roles will join the senior executive contributing in roles across the Department, including specialist candidates in the areas of technology, data and intelligence.

We are seeking candidates who:
• can show evidence of their strong leadership and management skills;
• demonstrate experience in a large operationally complex organisation and who are adept at crafting enterprise wide solutions;
• can successfully lead a team in areas which are diverse and complex;
• display evidence of superior operational conceptual and strategic thinking skills;
• forge clear directions and deliver large and complex projects within tight timeframes; and
• display superior communication, negotiating and stakeholder engagement skills.
Your application will provide evidence of exceptional accomplishment rather than simply years of experience and will clearly demonstrate how your experience will add value to the Department of Home Affairs.

Eligibility

The successful candidates must be Australian citizens, successfully undergo the Department’s Employment Suitability Clearance process and must establish and maintain a security clearance at a minimum level of Negative Vetting 2.
