Job Description


The National Manager Compliance is accountable to the Deputy CEO, Operations and contributes to AUSTRAC’s mission by:
• providing executive leadership to a Compliance Branch within the Operations Division

• guiding the policies, strategies, plans and processes of the Branch

• achieving the regular business objectives of the Branch

• undertaking external representational activity on the agency’s behalf, and

• being an integral part of AUSTRAC’s corporate management as a member of the Executive Committee (ExCom), the Operations Committee (OC) and other executive forums.

The key outcomes and accountabilities for this role include:
• Leading AUSTRAC’s oversight of compliance by industry with Australia’s AML/CTF regime.
• Considering and responding to regulatory developments, either domestically or internationally, that have broader implications for AUSTRAC’s operations.
• Delivering AUSTRAC’s strategic approach to the provision of outreach to industry and better regulation outcomes.
• Leading the development of regulatory intelligence and the analysis of compliance risks that have implications for AUSTRAC’s law enforcement and national security partners.
• Building and leveraging essential relationships with private and public sector partners to deliver on AUSTRAC’s strategic regulatory objectives.
• Providing a strong collaborative contribution with other AUSTRAC National Managers to shape and deliver the agency’s capability development agenda.
• Ensuring that AUSTRAC meets its corporate, statutory and legal requirements, and that the Branch operates within its budget.
• Reporting against progress and risks to AUSTRAC’s Operations Committee and other governance forums, including providing high-level advice to the Deputy CEO and CEO
• Represent AUSTRAC at government and financial sector forums domestically and internationally.



The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience, ideally with a regulatory or compliance context, and will have the ability to define and champion complex and evolving change.

Important knowledge, skills and experience
• Thorough understanding of the Australian financial services environment.
• Thorough understanding of contemporary financial sector regulatory issues.
• Highly experienced in managing within a dynamic compliance and information environment.
• Very strong relationship building skills across the public and private sectors.
• Experience in financial management, including innovative ways to achieve results within a financially constrained environment.

Desirable experience and knowledge
• Experience at a senior level in financial services, regulation and/or law enforcement domains.
• Awareness of relevant AML/CTF and national security legislation and policies.
• Experience in working with a range of stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions to complex regulatory issues.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a security assessment, maintain an ongoing security clearance and satisfy AUSTRAC’s pre-engagement checks.
