The mission of the Australian Federal Police is to provide dynamic and effective law enforcement to the people of Australia. It provides policing throughout Australia in relation to the prevention and detection of crimes against the Commonwealth, its laws and integrity, and community police services to the ACT.

The AFP is seeking a Deputy Commissioner who will be responsible for supporting whole-of-government approaches to complex and shifting crime and security challenges. Reporting to the AFP Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner delivers strategies, long-term capability and future direction across the pillars of Operations, Capability and Capacity, and is responsible for addressing issues of strategic organisational significance, such as matters with political, safety and reputational impact.

To be a strong contender for appointment, you will possess:

* personal and professional standards, character and values of the highest order;
substantial experience in senior police management, law enforcement and contemporary policing;

* substantial experience in managing a large organisation and an ability to deal with the challenges of an international and domestic law enforcement environment;

* advanced conceptual and analytical skills to provide high-level advice and sustainable solutions to the Commissioner;

* a strong capacity to build solid relationships and forge strategic partnerships, excelling in leading complex teams and working with others to achieve superior results with local and international communities; and

* the vision, commitment and energy required to develop and implement successful and enduring change, and strategically move law enforcement initiatives forward using mutually beneficial solutions.

You will need to demonstrate outstanding values-based leadership, communication, networking, negotiation and change management skills. You will have a proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with multiple senior stakeholders and an ability to deliver results in a dynamic and flexible environment.

This role requires the execution of police powers. Candidates must be Australian citizens and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Top Secret (NV2) level.

The appointment of a Deputy Commissioner is for a fixed term of up to five years, with eligibility for re-appointment at the end of this term.
