Job Description


The ICT Security Section plays a key role in ensuring agency compliance with whole of Government standards for ICT Security and ensuring the protection of the departments information assets. The department is seeking suitably skilled officers to assist with providing high level policy advice and technical analysis pertaining to information security within the department’s ICT Services and Operations Branch. The successful applicants would demonstrate their ability to contribute positively towards ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the department’s ICT systems, electronic information and business operations.

The Job
In the role of an IT Security Officer the successful candidates will:
• Assist in the assessment of ICT Systems as a pre-requisite to systems accreditation;
• Assist in ICT security incident response;
• Assist in ensuring the technical security of systems comply with the controls in the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Information Security Manual (ISM);
• Provide Technical Assessment of changes within the department’s ICT environment, through the department’s change management process;
• Provide sound and accurate security advice to departmental stakeholders, with a focus on enabling business;
• Provide ICT Security operational support;
• Undertake administration of security devices, such as email and web devices;
• Contribute to achieving the strategic direction for information security within the department as set by the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO);
• Assist in the administration of selected Technical Security Measures and monitor their effectiveness in protecting departmental assets;
• Maintain a knowledge of known and emerging technical vulnerabilities and mitigation strategies;
• Assist in identifying opportunities to improve the security posture of the Department’s network and information;
• Assist the IT Security Manager (ITSM) in the development and maintenance of the department’s information security policies, practices and security framework; and
• Raise awareness of information security issues with system owners and departmental staff.

The successful candidates may be required to be rostered for on-call duties and work after hours.

Knowledge and Experience
Basic experience in ICT security is essential.


These positions require a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level. To be eligible for employment with the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, an applicant must be an Australian Citizen. An applicant's suitability for employment with the department will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement for the applicant to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where relevant a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a period of 6 months' probation. Any applicant that, in the course of their work, requires unescorted access within an aviation or maritime security zone will be required to obtain and maintain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) or Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
