Duties


The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science facilitates the growth and productivity of globally competitive industries. It also supports the building of a strong scientific capability, business innovation, and the commercialisation of new ideas as critical requirements for productivity and economic growth.

The National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division within the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurement. The NMI is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading national metrology institutes. Our staff deliver cutting edge measurement services and research from unique facilities across Australia.

The NMI is seeking fill two key leadership roles:

• 12 month non-ongoing General Manager within the Analytical Services Branch.
• Ongoing General Manager within the Physical Metrology Branch.

As a Senior Executive Service Band 1 General Manager, you will play a significant role in contributing to the strategic direction and leadership of the NMI, delivering reform and driving change in both policy and operations. The roles require strategic, innovative and self-motivated people with exceptional influencing and relationship management skills and the drive and initiative to make a difference.

The successful applicants will have a proven track record in the following areas:

• Proven ability to build and maintain productive working relationships to achieve cross-government outcomes.
• Proven ability to work as part of a senior multidisciplinary team to achieve organisational objectives in a policy and service delivery environment.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Highly developed leadership and people management skills.

Eligibility


ANALYTICAL SERVICES - NON-ONGOING ROLE
The successful candidate will hold a degree in a scientific or engineering discipline ideally with experience in an analytical laboratory environment. Post-graduate qualifications and/or equivalent experience in business management is highly desirable, as is proven capacity for strategic business analysis and development.

PHYSICAL METROLOGY - ONGOING ROLE
The successful candidate will hold a degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline. Experience in metrology, research, international engagement, business development and contract management are highly desirable.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
 

Notes


This recruitment process is being used to fill one current ongoing and one current non-ongoing SES Band 1 position. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing SES Band 1 vacancies should they become available within 12 months from the date advertised.

Some travel may be involved for the Analytical Services position.

Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

Non-ongoing opportunities may be offered for an initial period of up to 18 months with the possibility of extension (maximum 3 years).
