Job Description


The ATO is seeking an experienced and successful professional to lead the delivery of its Smarter Data Program. Our ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader with the ability to shape a data and analytics capability within a large and complex organisation.

As the Deputy Commissioner Smarter Data, you will play a critical role in leading, shaping and delivering an organisational data and analytics capability, working collaboratively with other senior leaders across the organisation including in the application of that capability to priority business areas.

Your senior leadership and relationship management skills, experience working in large and complex organisations, combined with a contemporary understanding of the management and use of significant data holdings to drive insight and business value, will enable you to:

• promote a data and insight-hungry culture
• improve data quality and accessibility
• further develop and embed a sustainable data and analytics discipline and capability that can service organisational needs now and into the future and which supports whole-of-government directions
• in collaboration with business leads, apply that capability to help deliver exceptional client experiences, detect and target risks and increase productivity
• drive innovation and flexibility in both the delivery of capability and the analysis of business problems, keeping the ATO well positioned on emerging technologies and approaches to obtaining insight and value from our data holdings
• build strong and effective relationships both internally and externally to help support and drive an agreed data and analytics strategy
• lead and manage:
- a large workforce with a diverse range of skills, some highly specialised
- a range of complex, business critical functions
- a significant operating budget

The ideal candidate will be a well respected and trusted leader with:

• proven performance as a senior leader working in a complex environment with data and analytics (or related fields) to build capability and drive insight and business value.
• demonstrated experience resolving complex and sometimes novel issues in the data and analytics field, including the provision of informed strategic advice.
• excellent relationship management skills including the ability to engage and work collaboratively with a large and diverse network of clients and stakeholders to influence outcomes.
• a strong, strategic understanding of the ATO’s vision and how data and analytics principles and practices enable the ATO to achieve its critical priorities and continue its transformation to a data-driven, client-centric business.

We offer a competitive remuneration package (including allowances and superannuation) in the range of $286,982 to $324,713 per annum, depending on experience.

The role may be offered in one of the following locations: Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide



Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

This process may be used to fill the position on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. Non-ongoing opportunities may be filled for a period of up to five years
