The ATO is seeking highly respected, experienced and successful professionals for Deputy Commissioner roles within the Law Design & Practice Group (LD&P).

As a senior member of the LD&P leadership team, you will play an important role in contributing to the overall strategic direction of the Law Design and Practice Group and the ATO. In these roles you will be a trusted advisor to Treasury and Government. You will work in partnership across the ATO to prioritise issues, form and advocate the ATO agenda and develop a compelling argument for policy and law change. Law Design & Practice consists of three business lines: Tax Counsel Network (TCN), Policy, Analysis and Legislation (PAL) and Review and Dispute Resolution (RDR). These roles will be in either TCN or PAL.

• Policy, Analysis and Legislation: brings together the policy, law and administrative design capabilities across the ATO. In this role, you will work with Treasury, business lines and other stakeholders to influence the design and direction of the tax and super systems. You will champion simpler, principle based policy and legislation to deliver an improved and streamlined client experience, ensuring that the legislation can be interpreted and administered in line with policy intent.

• Tax Counsel Network: are leaders in finding solutions for issues within the law, its interpretation and application. You will proactively interact with the community, Government, Treasury, the Courts and senior members of the profession and provide them with the advice and support they need to administer the system with confidence.

You will be collaborative and influential with the ability to proactively develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders; and actively engage, inform and advise a range of major stakeholders in relation to various complex issues.

Ideal candidates will be recognised, well respected and trusted leaders, with:
• Exposure to high level stakeholders, with proven ability to develop relationships with public and private sector senior executives and influence and drive key agenda matters across Government.
• Strong client focused approach, including the ability to design and develop law and administrative frameworks that are simple, user-centred and drive effective outcomes.
• Excellent communication and relationship management skills including the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse network of stakeholders and clients to provide an exceptional client experience and maintain community confidence.
• Experience in leading and managing in challenging, complex and fast paced environments.
• Proven experience in providing practical and accessible legal advice, guidance and support to stakeholders and clients that is tailored to their needs.
• Proven experience in interpreting and applying the law to deliver fair, consistent and appropriate outcomes with a whole of system focus.
• A degree in law is desirable but not a pre-requisite.

Initial vacancies may be filled as ongoing or non-ongoing / full-time or part-time roles in the Policy, Analysis and Legislation and Tax Counsel Network business lines in the following locations:
• Policy, Analysis and Legislation: the preferred location is Canberra. However, Sydney or Melbourne may be considered, noting that regular travel to Canberra would be required.
• Tax Counsel Network: vacancies may be considered for filling in: Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth.

We offer a competitive remuneration package (including allowances and superannuation) in the range of $286,982 to $324,713 per annum, depending on experience.



Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

This process may be used to fill the position on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. Non-ongoing opportunities may be filled for a period of up to five years
