Job Description

Duties


As the District Registrar, Canberra of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal you will have the opportunity to expand the registry’s operations while also using your legal knowledge to manage more complex legal issues and conduct alternate dispute resolution proceedings.

You will manage a team of staff responsible for delivering registry and client services to both external and internal stakeholders, and deal with complex queries from parties to applications before the Tribunal.

To be successful in this position you will demonstrate your strategic focus, ability to achieve results and cultivate productive working relationships. You will have a robust but sensible and effective approach to managing change and communicate clearly and negotiate confidently while doing so.

In return for your can-do approach in bringing our registry through this time of growth and transition we are prepared to offer full time employment in an ongoing (permanent) or non-ongoing (temporary) capacity dependent upon your needs and the operational needs of the AAT. Part-time work arrangements may also be considered.
 

Eligibility


You must possess a recognised degree in Laws or be admitted as a practitioner to the High Court or Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory. You will also be required to have or obtain, and maintain, an Australian Government Negative Vetting Level 2 (Top Secret) security clearance.

Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term

This position may be offered as ongoing or non-ongoing (temporary) dependent upon the needs of the successful candidate and the operational needs of the AAT.

If the position is filled on a non-ongoing basis, it will initially be offered for a period of up to 12 months, with a possibility of extension of up to three years.

The Order of Merit established through this selection process may be used to fill the position on an ongoing basis within the first 12 months.

About Administrative Appeals Tribunal 

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has offices located in all states of Australia and the Australian Capital Territory and provides independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government, some non-government bodies and the Norfolk Island Government.

On 1 July 2015 the Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal and Social Security Appeals Tribunal were merged with the AAT. The amalgamated AAT comprises a number of Divisions: Social Services and Child Support, Migration and Refugee, and General and Other.
