Job Description


The Library is seeking an experienced and passionate Indigenous Curator with extensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and communities, and preferably with experience working with an educational or cultural institution in a role of outreach to First Nations people. This position requires someone who can operate independently, is focused on the achievement of outcomes and can work collaboratively with a range of staff, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and the cultural sector.

The Curator will provide strategic advice on collection development initiatives, making collections accessible to First Nation’s people and communities, observing cultural protocols and developing the capability of other Library staff in appropriate use of Indigenous collections for publications, exhibitions, education and other public outreach activities, onsite and online.

The successful applicant will be able to mentor and support other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Library staff and build confidence and capability among non-Indigenous staff to make appropriate decisions about use of First Nations collection material and making Library collections and services accessible to Indigenous people and communities. We are seeking applications from those who have proven experience, showing strong stakeholder management skills, effective communication and liaison skills, strong networking skills and managing and developing staff. A solid understanding of collection protocols for First Nations cultural collections and service delivery is essential.
