About the Office

The Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman (the office) safeguards the community in its dealings with Australian Government entities and certain private sector organisations. We ensure that their administrative actions are fair and accountable by handling complaints, conducting investigations, performing audits and inspections, encouraging good administration and discharging specialist oversight tasks. The Ombudsman also influences improvement in public administration in the region through collaboration with partner entities.

The office has six major functions: Complaint Investigations, Own-motion Investigations, Compliance Audits, Immigration Detention Oversight, the Commonwealth Public Interest Disclosure Scheme and Private Health Insurance Consumer Information. In addition to these functions the Ombudsman has eight specialist roles: Defence Force, Immigration, Law Enforcement, ACT Ombudsman, Postal Industry, Overseas Students, Private Health Insurance and VET Student Loans.

The Office is currently seeking applications from people who are interested in temporary employment within the Public Contact Team, located in either our Adelaide or Melbourne office.


As a member of a geographically dispersed team you will be responsible for the receipt and processing of complaints and enquiries about Australian Government agencies received through the Public Contact area into the Ombudsman's office.

Duties include:

1. Receive and register in the complaint management system incoming telephone, written, electronic and in-person complaints.

2. Assess complaints and enquiries, provide accurate information, refer and make timely decisions in accordance with guidelines and delegations.

3. Communicate appropriately with a diverse complainant population. Ensure that the style in which information is communicated to complainants is appropriate to the circumstances.

4. Assist the office's strategic areas through the identification and reporting of issues of interest.

5. Ensure office recordkeeping practices are adhered to and that all contacts with complainants and administrative actions are noted in an appropriate, accurate and timely manner so that good records are maintained.

6. Other duties as directed.
