Job Description


The Department of Veterans’ Affairs is seeking to recruit the Principal Member of the Veterans’ Review Board (VRB). The VRB is an independent statutory merits review tribunal, which may affirm, vary or set aside certain decisions made under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 or determinations made under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004.

The VRB comprises a Principal Member, Senior Members, Services Members and Members. The Principal Member is a full-time appointee and other members are appointed on a part-time basis.
The Principal Member is responsible to the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs for the operation of the VRB and the arrangement of its business. The Principal Member holds an important leadership and management role providing the strategic focus to ensure a very high standard of decision making within the VRB. The Principal Member is also expected to undertake regular sittings within the jurisdiction.

In addition to other responsibilities, the Principal Member presides at hearings, appears before Senate Estimates and other parliamentary committees and manages overall Alternative Dispute Resolution Processes. This would include drafting decisions and written directions.



You will need to be an admitted lawyer with at least seven years’ post admission experience and preferably hold, or be eligible to hold a practicing certificate issued by the Law Society of New South Wales. In addition, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 clearance. Military experience or service is highly desirable.


The appointment would be for a period not exceeding five years.

Total remuneration $313,350.
