Job Description


The Fair Work Commission (the Commission) is the national workplace relations tribunal. It is an independent body with power to carry out a range of functions including:

• providing a safety net of minimum conditions, including minimum wages in awards
• facilitating good faith bargaining and making enterprise agreements
• dealing with applications in relation to unfair dismissal
• regulating how industrial action is taken
• resolving a range of collective and individual workplace disputes through conciliation, mediation and in some cases public tribunal hearings
• functions in connection with workplace determinations, equal remuneration, transfer of business, general workplace protections, right of entry and stand down.

The work of the Commission is carried out by Commission Members, overseen by the President, with the support of administrative staff.

The Commission is a statutory authority with offices in each State and Territory. The majority of staff are based in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Employment terms and conditions are derived from the Public Service Act 1999 and the Fair Work Australia Enterprise Agreement 2011-2014. Employees must adhere to the Code of Conduct and behaviour is to be consistent with the Australian.

The Tribunal Services Branch works across the Commission to provide support to the effective operation of the tribunal, including: Associate support for tribunal members; library and records management services; member support including Member research support, s.394 arbitration coordination, workplace relations and economic research, Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal and tribunal events and project support.

Description of Role

Reporting to the Manager SA, WA & NT, Associates, with professional, coordination and development guidance provided by the Manager, National Associates, perform a full range of professional support services to Commission Members.


1. As an Associate to a Member of the Commission and consistent with the Commission’s performance planning and management arrangements, flexibly undertake responsibilities associated with:

• the administration/operation of a Member’s office, using Commission information technology and communications facilities and systems, particularly the Case Management System (CMS+).
• formal preparation and publication to the website of listed matters, documents, orders and decisions as set out in the Commission Publishing guides.
• research in the field of labour law and workplace relations.
• Clerk of Court functions in Commission hearings and preparation of hearing rooms.
• general administrative/executive assistant duties including networked diary controls, preparation and maintenance of Commission files, proofreading, travel bookings, etc.
• maintenance and securing of all books, records, papers, files and reference material.
• provide relief associate support to other Members and otherwise assist the Tribunal Services Branch when requested.

2. Liaise, as required, with Commission Members and staff, workplace relations practitioners, employers, employees, employer and employee bodies (including their representatives and officials), legal practitioners and other parties (including unrepresented parties).

3. Travel with a Member when required.

4. When not allocated to a specific Member, or in any other circumstances, as directed, assist other Associates or Commission staff with work to ensure achievement of national work standards and targets.

5. Perform other duties as directed by the National Associates Team Coordinator, Registry Managers and/or Director, Tribunal Services Branch.
