Job Description

The Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) promotes an improved workplace relations framework to ensure that building work is carried out fairly, efficiently and productively for the benefit of all building industry participants, without distinction, and for the benefit of the Australian economy as a whole. The ABCC works to achieve this framework by providing assistance, advice and education to the industry; monitoring and promoting compliance with relevant laws; undertaking enforcement activities; using information and analysis to inform decision making.

The ABCC seeks a Senior Lawyer to undertake a Special Counsel position within the Office of the General Counsel. The Office of the General Counsel operates nationally and is responsible for the agency’s legal practice management, providing oversight and co-ordination in the deployment of legal resources across the country, the assessment of appropriate cases for litigation by the agency, and the provision of high level technical advice, support and guidance to regional agency lawyers in the conduct of their work.

Reporting to the General Counsel, the role of the Special Counsel is to advise, manage and where appropriate, undertake internal compliance functions and processes, including in respect of freedom of information, public interest disclosure and privacy laws. In addition the Special Counsel will provide internal corporate legal services and provide technical and strategic advice to agency regional lawyers.

Australian citizenship is required for employment at the ABCC.
