ABOUT THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL’S DEPARTMENT
The Attorney-General's Department delivers programmes and policies to maintain and improve Australia's law and justice framework, and strengthen our national security and emergency management. Through the Australian Government Solicitor, we also provide legal services to the Commonwealth (including legal advice and representation).
Our department is the central policy and coordinating element of the Attorney-General's portfolio, for which the Attorney-General and the Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Counter-Terrorism are responsible.
Our department is structured into four groups to effectively and efficiently deliver a range of policy and programmes against strategic aims and broader portfolio objectives:
• Civil Justice and Corporate
• Criminal Justice
• National Security and Emergency Management
• Australian Government Solicitor

We are seeking managers and senior advisers with the interest and ability to support the Government’s law and justice agenda while strengthening and supporting the national security and emergency management agenda. Through the utilisation of professional legal skills, solutions-based thinking, strong written and verbal communication skills, the successful candidates will be committed to delivering results.
As a Senior Legal Officer, you will manage and have responsibility for the delivery of the work of your team and may be required to represent the department at meetings and external forums. You will be expected to build and maintain excellent relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Applicants must be Australian citizens to be eligible for engagement. These are security assessed positions and the successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain at least a Baseline security clearance.
Applicants for Senior Legal Officer roles must hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Secretary, is appropriate to the duties of the office, or admission in Australia as a legal practitioner.
AGD is advertising Executive Level 1 and Senior Legal Officer roles concurrently. Those applying for a Senior Legal Officer role will automatically be considered for an Executive Level 1 role unless the applicant advises AGD otherwise.
A merit pool will be created from this vacancy, and will be active up to twelve months after the date of this gazettal.
Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term
This recruitment process is being used to fill both ongoing and non-ongoing positions.
These non-ongoing opportunities will be offered for a specified term of varying periods up to 18 months, with the possibility of extension. The maximum initial engagement period is 18 months which can possibly be extended to 3 years as per the Public Service Regulations 1999, Sub-regulation 3.5(3).requirements.
