Job Description

Duties

The Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) provides Australian Customs and Border Protection Services (ACBPS) with front-line response capability to act when persons of national security interest attempt to cross the border.
The CTU is capable of deploying rapidly across Australia to address national security and where appropriate other border risks where they manifest.
The CTU will enforce border laws. The officers in the CTU will be trained in law enforcement techniques including in adversary management and use of force.
These are designated “Use of Force” positions and officers must meet mandatory medical, fitness, and psychometric standards to obtain and retain their accreditation within the ACBPS operational safety environment.

Key Responsibilities
Working as part of well-equipped and multi-disciplinary specialist team that will exercise the full suite of legislative powers available to ACBPS officers, you will take a proactive approach and deliver high quality outcomes in a technically complex environment.
You will use your demonstrated skills to lead a small team to respond to national security risks including:
• participating in intervention activities in major international airports in Australia
• performing surveillance and targeting activities across the entire airport environment to capture and report intelligence on known entities of national security interest and on any possible associates
• examining travellers and their baggage, personal effects and electronic equipment
• detaining and arresting suspects and where appropriate handing over suspects to the Australian Federal Police
• liaising with partner agencies to ensure responses meet requirements, to deliver up information in response to operational activities and to secure appropriate support where required, and
• as part of your daily activities, be responsible for creating complete and accurate records in accordance with the Recordkeeping Practice Statement and Instruction and Guidelines.

Highly desirable
A background in investigations, law enforcement and/or expertise in national security is desirable in a candidate for this role.
Successful Applicants
To be successful in this operating environment, members of the Senior Counter Terrorism Unit Officer will need to:
• meet and maintain specified medical and fitness standards
• successfully complete Use of Force training and maintain a Use of Force permit
• be willing to carry and use personal defence equipment including weapons
• be prepared to undertake shift work – the Senior Counter Terrorism Unit Officer is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and
• be prepared to be deployed across Australia.

A career in ACBPS is unique and is not your typical 9-5 office job. You get to travel, see remote areas and have a variety of experiences each and every day.
ACBPS recognises the importance of family networks and work/life balance and promotes policies that help you maintain that life style.
