Job Description

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry provides strategic policy advice and implements policies and programs that ensure Australia’s agricultural, fisheries, food and forestry industries remain competitive, profitable and sustainable. The Department strives to ensure natural resources are sustainably managed and accessed; and supports primary industries with scientific advice and economic research, promotes their increased access to markets, and helps protect them from diseases.

As a Deputy Secretary (SES Band 3) in the Department, you will lead a diverse team that has responsibility for significant strategic policy advice and development and for the day-to-day management of the department’s corporate functions. You will provide high-level policy advice to the Minister, Secretary and departmental executive, and work closely with key executives in other Commonwealth and state government agencies, and with industry and community stakeholders. You will provide leadership across a range of issues including national drought policy and programs; industry response to climate change; and national and international fisheries and forestry; and be responsible for the portfolio’s budget strategy and innovation in policy development and implementation.

To be a strong contender for this important and challenging role you will excel in working in complex and challenging environments, be an outstanding leader and manager and have demonstrated experience in high level policy development and analysis. You will have strong strategic capability, an ability to quickly grasp complex issues and be able to present solutions that are practical and responsive. Your outstanding stakeholder relationship skills, collegiate personal style and your ability to engender trust and respect will be complemented by sound judgement, intellectual rigour, tenacity and resilience.
