Senior Executive Lawyer – Employment Law Office of General Counsel Canberra

The Australian Government Solicitor's (AGS) Office of General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a Senior Executive Lawyer with at least 8 to10 years' experience in employment law, including employment and industrial relations matters, to lead our Employment Law Team.

OGC specialises in the provision of legal advice and assistance to the Commonwealth Government and its agencies in relation to constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation and public policy development, implementation, administration and decision-making, as well as acting for the Commonwealth in constitutional litigation and coordinating the conduct of cases involving constitutional issues. The practice includes a busy Employment Law Team. OGC comprises approximately 70 lawyers and 13 support staff, and includes a large number of outposted lawyers.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated extensive experience in employment law including:
– the Fair Work Act
– enterprise/collective bargaining and industrial disputes
– terms and conditions of employment
– disciplinary and termination of employment matters
– performance management issues
– breach of contract and adverse action claims
– personal grievances
– restructuring and redundancies
– employment contracts
– harassment and discrimination claims.

The successful applicant will be expected to:
– take a leading role in expanding the employment law practice of OGC, in managing key clients, and in exposing more junior lawyers to a range of clients
– provide high-quality legal advice, assistance and other services to AGS clients
– sustain and develop strong client relationships and share work and information with other lawyers
– exercise sound professional and business judgement
– contribute significantly to the development of more junior lawyers, by managing their performance and providing opportunities for them to work on a variety of matters as well as careful supervision and feedback as part of settling and second counselling draft advices
– be strongly involved in AGS practice groups and networks
– contribute significantly to continuing legal education activities
– achieve individual financial targets and contribute to the overall business objectives of OGC
– actively work to ensure compliance with the Legal Services Directions and AGS National Professional Standards for matters in their own practice and matters they are supervising.

Knowledge and skills required:
– an LL.B, and admitted to practise law in Australia
– at least 8 to 10 years' experience in the specialist area of employment law
– excellent research and legal analytical skills
– excellent writing skills
– outstanding interpersonal and persuasive skills
– demonstrated capacity to effectively train, mentor, develop and supervise more junior legal staff
– the ability to work as an effective member or leader of a team with other lawyers, clients and support staff
– proven ability to work under pressure, and in urgent circumstances, alone or as a member of a team.

Knowledge and skills desirable:
– experience in public law and in advising government agencies
– an understanding of public sector employment law
– post-graduate qualifications in a relevant field.

This is a 12-month term contract that may become ongoing employment subject to performance during the initial 12-month engagement. Salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant within the Senior Executive Lawyer salary range, depending on skills and experience.

The position is located in AGS's Canberra office.
