Senior Executives in APS
The management level below the Agency Head represents the senior leadership group and directly supports agency heads in achieving the goals of the agency. In Australian Public Service (APS) agencies, most of the senior leadership group are Senior Executive Service (SES) employees, employed under the

Remuneration and conditions for SES employees are managed at agency level. Applicants should refer any queries on these matters to the agency concerned.

The Government’s Opens in a new window Merit and Transparency policy applies to most APS agency head roles and other statutory office holders working in, or in conjunction with, APS agencies. The policy requires that vacancies in these offices should, in general, be filled following full merit-based selection procedures, including the vacancy being advertised as open to all eligible persons
- selection committees will be chaired by the relevant portfolio department Secretary (or his/her representative) and will include the Public Service Commissioner (or his/her representative); and
- where a selection process is to be conducted, all such vacancies will be notified the APS Gazette/APSjobs and externally.
