Job Description

Duties
Comcare is the federal occupational health and safety regulator. Comcare also supports injured federal workers helping with their early return to health, work and independence. Its work helps deliver on the Government’s long-term purpose of building a stronger, fairer Australia.

The Role:
Comcare seeks a high performing, energetic and forward-thinking lawyer to be General Counsel and to lead and manage Comcare’s legal services. The General Counsel is a member of the Comcare executive team and is a direct report to the CEO. The role is accountable for the delivery of high quality, timely and cost-effective legal services to Comcare through internal services and external panel arrangements. A large in-house legal team advises Comcare colleagues on a range of issues including workplace health and safety, corporate law, administrative law, AAT disputation, Federal Court litigation and the Commonwealth’s common law asbestos liabilities.

This position will deliver on the business and legal reforms needed to build a stronger Comcare through to 2015. The General Counsel will continue to deliver best practice legal services and drive reforms for improved outcomes announced by the Attorney General.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:
• Significant senior legal management experience and expertise
• Experience in delivery of well-regarded legal services
• Passion for business excellence and better ways of working
• Empathy for the needs and interests of federal workers affected by Comcare’s work
• Strong stakeholder collaboration and engagement
• Capacity to manage risk and accountability with sound decision making and problem solving skills
underpinned by the highest level of personal integrity and excellent communication skills.

The successful applicant must be eligible for admission as an Australian legal practitioner and possess (or obtain with 3 months) a current practising certificate.

The majority of in-house legal services are based in Canberra. The position may be based in Canberra or Melbourne and will require frequent interstate travel.

An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
