Job Description

Duties

Overview:

Staff at this level generally perform a supervisory role and undertake a
broad range of job functions or roles in the department’s National Office,
State and Territory Offices or at overseas posts.

As an APS Level 5 (APS 5), staff may have responsibility for individual
supervision or team management and may be required to determine
priorities, staffing and workflow. The role may involve some structured
decision-making and longer-term planning, as well as liaison with other
sections on policy issues. They may liaise with a range of stakeholders,
sometimes performing a representational role. Staff may also be required to
undertake procedural, clerical, administrative support or operational tasks.
Staff may conduct data collation and research activities and prepare written
reports for senior management. Staff will be responsible for delivering
results in accordance with their work goals. Staff will demonstrate a high
level of productivity, which will be assessed in the context of their role
within the Department.

Staff will possess a sound level of capability. All department staff are
expected to display behaviours consistent with the APS Values and the APS
Code of Conduct.

APS 5 (Client Services / Program Delivery) positions are expected in the
following Divisions:
• Citizenship, Settlement and Multicultural Affairs
• Community and Detention Services
• Systems
• People and Executive Services

Specific Duties:

Duties of an APS 5 include:

• Supervising staff within a work area including setting the direction
of work priorities and practices, monitoring work flow, allocating work and
managing staff rosters.
• Conducting team meetings.
• Identifying training needs and arranging and conducting training
sessions, including training new staff.
• Taking responsibility for dealing with accountable documents
including some monetary reconciliation.
• Liaising with other Departmental sections and agencies.
• Liaising with community groups.
• Representing the work area within and outside of the
Department, including at workshops, seminars and conferences.
• Preparing daily correspondence, including emails and letters, on
routine and non-routine matters.
• Providing input into corporate documentation, technical reports,
submissions, briefs and Ministerial representations.
• Performing research and investigation work and helping with
projects of a technical and specialised nature.
• Contributing to project work.
• Researching and applying legislation including maintaining
knowledge of relevant legislation and international conventions (for
example the Privacy Act.)

 
Eligibility
These are designated security assessed positions. The successful applicants will be required to undergo a security clearance. Late applications will not be considered.
