Job Description

Duties
The Department of Human Services (DHS) is about people and the services that we may need at different stages of our lives. The Human Services portfolio recently began a transformation to dramatically enhance its flexibility and effectiveness in delivering social, health and welfare services to Australians.

The Portfolio consists of the Department of Human Services—including the Child Support Agency and CRS Australia—and the Human Services agencies, Centrelink, Medicare Australia and Australian Hearing.

Together we work to improve government social and health-related services to all Australians.

We are one of the largest Australian Government organisations with a workforce of 41 000 people across Australia, leading to exciting career opportunities. This also means that, although most positions are located in Canberra, it may be possible to stay in your home state or work in a new and exciting location. The locations of positions will be confirmed throughout the selection process. We encourage applicants to contact us if you would like further details.

From 2010, DHS will work to transform the way government services are delivered to Australians, this reform will enhance capability to further this Government’s social inclusion agenda, and deliver broader government reforms, such as health reform and the review of taxation

Our 12-month graduate program has two intakes beginning in August 2010 and January/February 2011 and gives graduates the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally. Joining the DHS National Graduate Program you will be able to select which of the three Portfolio Agencies you would like to begin your experience with.

During the graduate program you will be provided with rotation opportunities across each agency, which will each provide new learning opportunities. Graduates across each of the agencies will be provided with the same program structure and learning and development opportunities.

About Department of Human Services

We work with other departments and agencies to ensure early consideration of service delivery issues in the policy development process, promote innovation, continuous improvement and whole-of-government solutions and work to develop a more strategic approach to addressing fraud and non-compliance, and reducing red tape. We employ people in a broad range of areas including policy development, service delivery, legal services, finance, communication, administration, project management and staff training.
